Who referees the games?
Referees are not used at the 5U, 6U, 7U, 8U age levels, rather one coach per team is allowed on the field with the players to help with positioning and encouragement, and also act as a referee (although the rules for the younger kids are not complex). Older games for players 9U and up have either youth or adult referees, who are also volunteers. Referees receive AYSO mandated training appropriate to the age group and their duties.

Who can volunteer to be a referee?
Anyone 12 years of age or older. While soccer knowledge and experience are a benefit, AYSO provides the necessary training to be a successful volunteer referee.

Are volunteer referees also insured by AYSO?
Yes, the same liability insurance as for volunteer coaches.
